Coaching is a process, a series of professional conversations to reach a goal. It is different from consulting in that the coach does typically NOT give specific advice. It is also different from therapy in that it is normally focused on the future and that it is not about addressing mental health issues.

So, what IS coaching? (Ping me to find out more.  )

Partnering with a coachee in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.  (ICF)

I love this definition. There is quite a lot in there, so let’s unpack this a bit.

  • Maximize potential: Using what is and take things from there, make it into something bigger, more fulfilling.
  • Personal and professional: Goals can come from all areas of life, really, and coaching can help with any of these. Coach and coachee finetune this together as part of the process
  • Creative: There are a range of ways to do this, and I trained in a variety of approaches. All of which have come in useful at the right time with the right person and topic. Check with your coach how they are trained and how they like to work, and pick something that resonates with you (allow for stretching of comfort zone…)
  • Thought-provoking: Different view and ideas, new ways of looking at situations, increasing options. Let’s face it, if you had already figured things out on a cocktail napkin, you wouldn’t need to partner with somebody on this. Having an outside view, somebody who has your best self, your best interest in mind to partner with is immensely helpful and can fast-track positive change like nothing else

Coaching is not just for sports, or for senior leaders. It is for everyone looking to make changes.
